Types of fire sprinkler heads
There are a variety of fire sprinkler heads for commercial properties. If you’ve got a specific requirement, there’s a sprinkler head that will fit it. While some sprinkler heads have similarities, others don’t. For example, the heads that work on a deluge system wouldn’t be appropriate for a standard wet pipe system. To avoid any confusion, let’s go over the four major types below:
Pendant sprinkler heads
Among the most commonly installed are the pendant head type sprinkler. They protrude down from the ceiling and have a deflector attached to them so that when it is activated, water will hit the deflector and spread out in a circular pattern, covering a wider area.
Upright sprinkler heads
For commercial properties containing ductwork or beams that block the ceiling, an upright head is a preferred style. The head simply sits on top of the water pipe and the water is directed into a deflector similar that on the pendant head, redirecting the water downward, also in a circular pattern.
Sidewall sprinkler heads
For smaller areas that aren’t a good fit for regular sprinkler heads, the sidewall head is a great option. Hotels often use these, as water pipes in the ceilings aren’t an option and are instead placed in the walls. Rather than deploying water in a full circular pattern, the water is shot down in a half-circle spray pattern.
Concealed sprinkler heads
For a smoother, cleaner aesthetic, sprinkler heads can be hidden behind the surface of the wall or ceiling. A plate is placed over the hole in the wall or ceiling to conceal the sprinkler, but in an emergency situation, the plate will fall off around 20 degrees below the temperature at which the sprinkler is activated. Concealed heads are similar to pendant heads in that they too utilize a fluid-filled glass bulb as its activation mechanism.
